Asbestos removal - Asbestos was once a widely used building material used in tile, plaster, siding and insulation. Because of its superior tensile strength and ability to resist changes from extreme hot and cold temperatures, it has been a common material in residential, commercial and industrial building applications. However, asbestos is a dangerous and deadly material to work with. Asbestos becomes extremely hazardous when its fine particulates are released into the air through mishandling. These particulates can affect the workers handling the asbestos as well any living organism within the area. Asbestos is known to cause lung cancer and mesothelioma.

Asbestos Testing

Asbestos can be found throughout older homes in various locations. Some asbestos is assumed to be in any siding, tile, shingles, joint compound, plaster or thermal boiler insulation that was installed in the early 50’s up until the late 70’s. If you’re unsure if your older home may contain asbestos; don’t take the chance and DIY the work yourself. Get an asbestos test to ensure you and your family do not get exposed to asbestos. Even if you’re wearing the proper respirators and gloves, asbestos particulates can get trapped in carpet for years to come. Always let the pros do the test first.

Asbestos Removal

Once a test confirms you have asbestos, it needs to be removed immediately. Finding a licensed and insured asbestos contractor is a must. Some state certifications may be required. EPA certification may be needed in some states. Certain areas may require the asbestos contractor to pull a permit to remove and dispose of the material. A building inspector will examine the material before and after the project to ensure it is within local regulations and conforms to local building codes. A quick call to your local building department can help you to find out what local procedures you need to take when removing asbestos.

Always get at least three bids and have the asbestos contractors provide you with a cost breakdown list of their services, materials and labor costs so you can better compare apples to apples between bids.
